Short and long-term respite care offers many benefits to you and your loved ones. To find out more, read some of our most commonly asked questions.

What should you look for when researching respite aged care homes?

When looking for a facility that offers respite services, we recommend considering the following:

  • Location - Many families choose an aged care home that is conveniently located close by as they are familiar with the area and can visit easily.
  • Tour - Having the option to view the facility gives you the opportunity to ask any questions and see if it would be a good fit.
  • Care needs - Check to make sure that the facility is equipped to deal with the resident’s needs, especially if they have a medical condition or cognitive impairment.
  • Services - Understanding the services and amenities available to respite residents is important - for example, can they access the lifestyle activities and health practitioners?
What are the benefits of respite care?

Caregiving can be physically and emotionally demanding, leading to burnout and stress if left unmanaged. Our respite packages offer caregivers a much-needed break, allowing them to rest, recharge, and maintain their own wellbeing.

For the resident, respite is a wonderful way to experience community living while receiving support tailored to their care needs. This helps to reduce isolation and improve mental health. Another benefit is that respite care is flexible, so you can choose the duration of stay and explore permanent residential care without making a long-term commitment.

How long can you stay as a respite resident?

At Oxa, respite residents can stay with us from two weeks to a longer period of time, depending on their needs and room availability. Residents receiving the government subsidy are eligible to take 63 respite care days each financial year, which can be extended by three weeks if approved by ACAT.

Our friendly care staff can discuss the length of stay during your initial meeting to make sure the resident’s needs are fully catered for.

Why might someone need respite care?

Respite care is a flexible and valuable solution that is beneficial for both caregivers and older people with care needs. For caregivers, respite provides temporary relief so you can take a break and prioritise your own needs and mental health. Other reasons for choosing respite are if an older person is recovering from surgery or an illness and needs extra support.
